The weekend has many things going for it here in the great state of Indiana. First of all, there are cook outs and beer. Secondly, the Indy 500 and more beer. The final point of this weekend often gets ignored and only mentioned by its platitudes. Monday is Memorial Day. This weekend we are supposed to be thankful and remember those who served. As Americans this should be a day that is up there with the Fourth of July because without our soldiers the day of our Independence would never had happened. There is no country in the world that was started and fought for by the people, so there really should be no excuse to dismiss this day for drinking beer and eating till we pop. Is this just the way we celebrate?
Americans within the last fourteen years have witnessed the climate of being an American change since 9/11. I am just commenting on what I have witnessed as an American citizen myself. We have seen two wars, the Patriot Act bring us closer to big government and those of us who are Christian are expected to submit to the feelings of a religion that tries to kill us. We are also forced to watch as our children lose history in the name of Political Correctness. Now with the riots in Ferguson and Baltimore that have recently plagued the headlines the narrative is slowly changing. Gone are the days of Martin Luther King jr. where non violence was the answer. The question facing black Americans or any community were truly answered because the country could have a debate. There is no debate that doesn't end in debate. As a white, Christian conservative woman I have been called a racist because I would like to think that if you fight the cops the consequences could be severe. Although, its something that I pray doesn't happen, yet the truth is often discarded for one's side grasp of power. Americans have always answered the call of justice whether it was the fight to end slavery, Jim Crow laws, Germany's tyrannical leader or the killing of 3,000 innocent people by a organization that seems to hate our freedoms. In creating more laws in the name of security the side of hate is winning. What do we have to be thankful for this Memorial Day weekend?
We are still living in the land of the free. (So far?) My family are able to criticize the government, worship how we please, practice the 2nd Amendment and practice free speech. If these things were not true the Lee Family would be in jail at the moment. Because we have plenty to say about the Obama Administration. This is exactly how we celebrate Memorial Day. We thank those who fight and die for the freedoms we enjoy. We drink the beer, eat the food and watch the race. We live the life that has been so bravely fought for till the very end. We will never forget the sacrifice that was made in the American people's lives. A big thank you to Ed Lee, Blake Pointdexter, Joe Click, Grandpa Connett and all those who fought and continue to fight, so that I may worship, eat and have that beer. Thank you with all my heart, mind and soul.
